Dupreme Murphy was looking for work without success, until he found Bedford Stuyvesant
When Dupreme Murphy graduated from high school, he thought he was set. He had returned to school because he wanted
to get a decent job and stay out of trouble, but more than six months had gone by and he was still waiting for a job offer.
“I didn’t have any money in my pocket,” says Dupreme Murphy. “I was barely eating. They helped me a lot.”
After three days of security training at Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, the doors to employment opened. “I had a job the next day,” says Murphy.
He says that the BSRC program was set up to help people like him, people most in need of help. Most importantly, the training was free. When you are not making ends meet, you do not have the funds for expensive employment training. He has since recommended
the program to several friends, who have also gotten good jobs with the help of BSRC.
Now, Dupreme Murphy is making $15 an hour at Summit Security, providing security services around the city. “It has been an opportunity to meet lots of people and get good experience.”
He is able to help his mom pay bills. For the first time he can buy his own boxing equipment – a favorite activity – and buy a weekly Metrocard to save money.
He is also planning to go to college and knows exactly who to ask for advice as he takes that step.
“Restoration Corporation didn’t only help me get a job. They help me with life, period.”
