Council Member Adrienne Adams joined CWE to tour the Sheet Metal Workers Local 28 training center on December 10th,
with Local 28 Education Director Leah Rambo.
The Council Member visited a welding class and met four-and-a-half year apprentices who are preparing to become journey-level workers in Local 28.
"I had the privilege of touring the Consortium for Worker Education (CWE) Local 28 Pre-Apprenticeship program, specifically geared towards training young sheet metal workers at every level to become licensed Journeymen (and women!)," said Council Member Adams.
"In partnership with Jobs to Build On, the program serves as a bridge for youth to gain stability and retention within the workforce. The robust program utilizes experienced instructors and provides a wide array of preparation, industry specific training and
employment services to upcoming expert workers annually."
Many of the apprentices are graduates of MAP Inc., a partner in the City Council's Jobs to Build On program. MAP Inc. is a pre-apprenticeship program that helps ensure that the Local 28’s membership reflects the diversity of New York and includes those most
in need of a chance at a good job.
