Press Release: CWE Taps Marco A. Carrión as Next President

FORMER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF EL PUENTE TO HEAD UP NON-PROFIT WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ORGANIZATION

For Immediate Release, Thursday, February 6, 2025 -- The Consortium of Worker Education today announced the selection of Marco A. Carrión as their next president, effective February 3, 2025. Carrión previously served as the Executive Director of El Puente, a human rights organization operating in New York City and Puerto Rico.

Carrión brings a wealth of experience in the government, labor, and nonprofit sectors to CWE. Before his tenure at El Puente, Carrión served for 7 years under Mayor de Blasio as the Commissioner of Community Affairs. Before that, Carrión served as the Political and Legislative Director of the New York City Central Labor Council and Chief of Staff to State Senator Gustavo Rivera.

“We want to thank our former President and founder Joseph McDermott for his four decades of service to the organization. He built an organization that has educated hundreds of thousands of workers across this city, and we wish him well in his retirement,” said Edgar Romney, CWE Board Chairman. “We are so pleased to bring Marco on board and are confident that under his leadership CWE will continue to succeed in its mission to uplift, empower, and educate New York City workers.”

“In my government, labor and non-profit roles, I have witnessed how CWE transforms lives by educating tens of thousands of workers each year,” said Carrión. “At this pivotal moment for our city, we must build on that legacy by delivering high quality programs and services that strengthen New York’s workers by preparing them for rapid changes in the workplace and the economy.”

Founded in 1985, CWE is a New York City non-profit workforce development organization, providing education, training, childcare, and job placement services to workers across the five boroughs. CWE serves as the workforce development arm of the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, providing vital training services to 36 union locals. CWE also partners with over 40 community-based organizations to provide educational services throughout the city. Last year, approximately 34,000 individuals, both union and community members, were enrolled in over 3,700 CWE classes and placement initiatives.
